Swinging Patty D – Patrick Lombardo

Swinging Patty D

This is a pattern called the Swinging Patty D by Patrick Lombardo. He was nice enough to take the time to give a step-by-step of the pattern. Take it away Patrick.

I wanted a pattern I could use on various species. I fish a little of everyone. I use this pattern on trout, bass, and steelhead. I wanted a fly that would have various weight without a lot of time at the vise.

Material List:
Hook: 60 degree bend jig hook size 2 to 1/0
Body top: Texas cut on magnum zingers
Body bottom: Angelina fiber or Senyo’s aqua veil chenille
Eye: real eye/ pseudo eyes in various sizes
Head: Senyo’s fusion dub or custom mix of angelina fiber and yarns/furs blended
Thread: UTC 210 denier

1/0 Eagle Claw 410 Jig hook Attach medium or large Barbell with UTC 210 thread. I like to use Angelina fiber or Senyo’s aqua veil chenille for the body. Tie in the end section then palmer the veil towards the eye. Stopping at the barbell. I then flip the hook in the vise. Then attach a Texas cut or magnum Zonker. Again stopping prior to the barbell. Clipping excess and stopping prior to the barbell. I blend a lot of yarn with flash. In this case I mixed Fusion Dub with a black dubbing. I add a clump of the mixture to the top and bottom of the hook. Once it is secure I push all the fiber to the back. I create a dubbing loop then figure 8 around the barbell. I like to take a bush and comb the fibers out. Adding the fibers to the top and bottom of the fly. Then again pushing everything back and securing the fibers. Finally a whip finish and superglue.
and that is the Swinging Patty D!

and that is the Swinging Patty D!

Skiddish Smolt

Fred, from the North 40 Fly Shop in Great Falls, is behind the vise today tying a slight variation of Jeff Hickman’s Skiddish Smolt. The Skiddish Smolt was designed as an Alaskan smolt, but it has found much favor on many trout waters and has been a big producer on the Missouri River for several years now. You can adjust the color scheme to suit your needs, but the keys are the heavy cone head with lots of flash. A great trigger streamer when fish are aggressively feeding on smaller fish.

Materials:
Dai-Riki #700 streamer hook – size 4
210 Ultra Thread – white
brass cone head – large – nickel
Lead wire .035
v-rib – small – red
Flashabou tinsel flash – white + silver
ostrich hurl
Ice Dub UV pearl

We hope you enjoyed the video!

Britton’s Mini “Bug Collar” Intruder

An Old School Intruder with an New School Twist – Bug Collars !
– by Shawn Britton

When it came to streamers I have always enjoyed fishing with lighter rods and flies. That being said, most of the streamers or intruders I tend to tie usually have a decent enough length and silhouette to get the job done, but I’ll tie the fly as light and cast-able as I can get away with and still have the fly get down.

Lately since I have been carrying the Bug Collars from Bozeman Fly Goods at the tying workshop, I have been adding them to my existing patterns as well as tying my lightweight mini Intruders with the Bug Collars, behind a Tungsten bead for a desired Hot Spot with minimal weight added to the fly. Instead of a waddington shank and a dumbbell on this particular intruder pattern, I’ll use a pre-made straight eye shank or cut my own from long shank straight eye streamer hooks. This enables me to downsize, fit, use the beads and collars leaving room enough to run 20-30 braid through them, the eyelet and back as well.

I have had success with this style of lightweight intruders for steelhead over the years and also trout, bass, etc. in the rivers and lakes. Now there is no doubt the added hotspot is bringing a few extra to the net.

IMG_4814

Here is a simple recipe for my Britton’s Mini “Bug Collar” Intruder

Hook/shank: A quality freshwater straight eye intruder shank or streamer hook of choice…
Bead: Tungsten Black Nickel 5/32…
Bug Collar: 9/64 3.7mm Fluorescent Orange or desired color…
Thread: Black 210 denier or desired color to match patterns…
Trailer Hook Braid: 20-30lb braided line…
Trailer: Daiichi #2557 Intruder hook
Tail: Two to three Plumes of Marabou, topped with sparse pearl flash…
Body: Wrapped Marabou…
Head: Puglisi Andromadous Brush topped with Sparse pearl flash…
Head topping: Schapplen of desired color.
Cement: Loon UV Flow

Note: This is a simple pattern that is usually tied about 3 inches in length. Tied in white, purple, black, etc.. Obviously If I want more length I extend the trailer braid/hook length accordingly, adding a few soft saddle feathers at the tail before I add the marabou.

Since it is the end of the year, I thought it would be neat to go back and pick out some flies that stood out to me through the entire year. Flies Around the Net seems to be a very popular post here on FrankenFly that I do monthly to show a variety of fine fly tying work by all the talented fly tyers out there. So here are twenty beautiful flies from 2014. Enjoy!

Chad Johnson’s Mega Minnow

$

The surge of popularity in articulated streamers, has left the humble single hook streamer somewhat forgotten. But a well tied single can hold predator attracting action, profile and are easy to cast all day. CJ’s Mega Minnow is tied to sucker big, smart, brown trout who have seen plenty of articulated big meaty flies. Chad Johnson, an Umpqua fly designer and Dally’s guide, has built in plenty of triggers for predator species, most predominantly the oversize eyes, protected in a helmet of Clear Cure Goo.
The profile is tall and meaty, bucktail and hackles giving the illusion of bulk and living movement without the water absorbing weight. The action comes from the lead wire on bend of hook: On the strip the rear weight ensures the fly swims flat through the water column and on the pause momentum will cause the fly to dart laterally. Fish it on a sinking line, tie it in your favorite color combo’s for any predator fish.
As featured in the Jan-Feb issue of American Angler.

Swingin’ D Fly by Mike Schultz

The ORIGINAL Bar Flies – Mike Schultz, Swingin’ D Streamer

Smallmouth junkies, this one’s for you! Our top-producing Smallmouth fly of 2014 was cooked up by our own Mike Schultz. Embodying many of the principals in Tommy Lynch’s D&D flies, the Swingin’ D is optimized for Smallies. The foam diver head gives it more of a “dart” and less of a “roll”. Faster to tie than your average “D” and designed for durability against chunk Smallies.

Best fished on an intermediate line and running higher in the water column. Make sure you’re using a very “sharp” retrieve and exaggerating the pause. They always eat on the pause…

The all white “Ghost Minnow” (shown) is our go-to, but make sure to pay your respects to Tito Santana with a chartreuse head.

Looking for hard to find materials to tie Schultzy’s Swingin’ D? Give Schultz Outfitters a call (734-544-1761). If you’re ever in the Ypsilanti, MI area be sure to stop by and check out our original Bar Flies tying event. Always the first. Still the best. If you can’t make it, be on the lookout for more tying videos shortly.

Steve Dally’s Hippy Chick

$
0
0
The Hippy Chick was designed initially as a heavy “nymph”, a mobile baitfish profile to be fished dead drift in deep fast water for the White River shad kills. The Shad Kills of late winter are a true feature “hatch” with shoals of dead and dying baitfish pushed through the power station turbines into the river. It’s chumming on a grand scale. The key to the best fishing is finding the right part of the water column in a wide range of flows and the Hippy Chick was another tool for the box.

It had to be heavy, but still mobile enough to mimic the “fluttering” movements of the dying shad, and with the “chesty” profile of our shad.

But, the basic premise, swathing a flashy underbody in the mobile marabou intruder style, lends itself to tying single hook and articulated streamers as well. To avoid the “wet pencil” look use thread pressure “reverse tying” the marabou fibres back to the weight: dumbbell eyes, coneheads or beads _ to flare the marabou and keep a baitfish profile, whether it is stripped or drifted

I use predominately pearl, or silver for the underbody and eyes on these, though the red conehead looks pretty trick too. Lighten up on the eyes if you want a streamer to strip.

Huge thanks to Brian Wise of Fly Fishing the Ozarks for his camera work, production and all around sense of lunacy.

HIPPY CHICK RECIPE (shad, heavy)

Hook: Gamakatsu B10S #6 through #1

Thread: Wapsi UTC 140 Red.

Eyes: Wapsi Nickel Plated Dumbbell Eyes (large)

Tail: Bunch from the butt end of an Extra Select Marabou feather. (See Note).

Body: Pearl Palmer Chenille medium

Wing: Tip of an Extra Select Marabou feather. (See Note).

Note: Pick out a nice long Wapsi Extra Select Marabou feather and stroke back the fibers so they stand out. Measure down from the tip until the stem just starts to thicken and cut the stem. Stroke the fibers forward on the butt section and you should be able to trim out a tail about the length of the body.

The top section gets tied in by the tip to the rear of the eyes, wrap the feather twice behind the eyes (stroke the fibers backwards on every turn). Wrap the marabou forward underneath the eyes, and keep wrapping and stroking back the fibers to the eye of the hook and tie off the feather.

Now use your left hand to evenly distribute the fibers, but train them top and bottom, and wrap the thread back until you get the appropriate flair.
