Fly tying of Kyle Schmer

14 year old Kyle Schmer from Fort Collins, Colorado emailed me letting me know he was a fan of FrankenFly. Kyle included a photo of a couple of his airbrushed poppers and an interesting little baitfish pattern. I was impressed with his flies, so I asked him to send me more photos of some of his other flies, so he did. Below you will see Kyle’s flies. It was very cool to see the work of an up and coming fly tyer.

So here’s to Kyle! Keep fly fishing and rocking the vise man!

If you don’t see the “Play” button above, click here to listen.

This is a terrific podcast featuring Mike Schmidt who owns Anglers Choice Flies. Tom Rosenbauer of Orvis hosts the podcast and conducts his normal show in the beginning and then speaks with Mike to make a very interesting, information filled podcast, especially if you are into big streamers.

Here is a link to the Junk Yard Dog video that is mentioned in the podcast.
http://www.orvis.com/news/fly-fishing/exclusive-video-how-to-tie-the-junk-yard-dog-streamer/
Tim Flagler made this video for Orvis and always does a fantastic job. I post many of his videos here on FrankenFly. I want to note that in this video he uses a different connection between the two hooks than Mike Schmidt does. Mike uses a Beadalon wire connection which he explains in the podcast. Tim Flagler uses a shank to make the connection in the video which gives the fly totally different action. I have clarified this with Mike himself.

Here are the official podcast notes from Orvis:
This week, I have a long and fascinating interview with Mike Schmidt, designer of such giant trout streamers as the Junk Yard Dog. He gives up his secrets on when to fish a giant streamer (and when not to), what techniques he uses, and also some tips on tying these flies and why he designs them the way he does. I don’t think I have learned so much in a podcast in a long time, and I hope you find it as inspiring and interesting as I did. I am ready to charge out there with some giant streamers right away.

Hook direction on streamers – Kelly Galloup

This is great advice on whether to put the hook up or down on your streamers. Here is the actual explanation that came with the video from Slide Inn.

In this Q&A segment, Mike Gerharz of Illinois asks: ” I have been watching your youtube Q&As in the Midwest. #3 and #4 were very relevant to tying large flies for our Smallmouth and Largemouth Bass. Articulation gives us a way to build larger flies and develop action. I do notice that your trout streamers mount dumbbell eyes so that the hook rides point down while our Bass flies like Clouser’s are weighted to ride point up. What are your thoughts on inverted (hook point up) Streamers?”

This is my version of the trout streamer “Gandalf”. Beefed up, stronger materials, bigger hook makes this perfect for pike.As usual feel free to play with colours and to vary the size of the eyes. I like to fish mine with the plastic lightweight eyes and a full floating line to keep Gandalf just below the surface down to 3ft deep with a longer leader.
Have fun!

Blane Chocklett’s T-Bone Musky Fly

Blane Chocklett swings by SO World Headquarters and cooks up his T-Bone musky fly. The T-Bone has a huge profile and a great “kick” that make it perfect for big ambush predators like Musky. More importantly, Blane demonstrates the use of articulated shanks and flex tubing, both of which are really pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in fly design. Great stuff Blane!

Beel’s Bearded Wonder

One of my streamer/fly patterns has been officially accepted to appear in the 2016 Orvis catalog!

Beel’s Bearded Wonder will be available in two sizes from Orvis. (pictured above). The larger is 6 inches in length, while the smaller version comes in at 4.5 inches. With the weight of the dumbell eyes it has a great jigging motion in the water.

This fly was previously known as the Bearded Biscuit, but I have changed the name to Beel’s Bearded Wonder. When using Google to search for the name “Bearded Biscuit”, urban dictionary is one of the top selections and it doesn’t have nice things to say about that name. I did not realize this when I named the fly. The reason for the name was that it was a biscuit for fish and it looks like it has a beard. Simple. However, I’m very happy with the new name, Beel’s Bearded Wonder. I just wanted to explain, so those who are familiar with the name and the fly would understand.

I am thrilled to be welcomed to the Orvis Fly Design team and feel truly honored to have my first fly accepted into the Orvis catalog!

You can find both versions in the FrankenFly Online Fly Shop.

Thanks for reading!
